What is in the box

What is in the blend
Valerian root. The one doing the work, and the reason this tastes earthy rather than sweet. Traditionally used to support relaxation and a settled evening.
Chamomile and lemon balm. The gentle pair, both long used to support calm and both easy on the stomach after a late dinner.
Licorice root. Where the natural sweetness comes from, which is why the cup needs no sugar. Traditionally used to support digestive comfort.
Spearmint. Cooling, and the reason the cup is pleasant rather than medicinal.

How to brew it
Boiling water straight off the kettle, cover the cup, 5 to 8 minutes. Roots release slowly and most people pull the bag far too early. Covering matters more than people expect, because it keeps the volatile oils in the cup instead of the kitchen.
When to drink it
About forty minutes before you want to be asleep. Not with dinner, and not once you are already in bed. The winding down is the point, not the cup.

How to brew it
Three teas, one rule
Everything in this box is a root, a leaf or a flower rather than a tea leaf, and all three want exactly the same treatment. Learn it once and the whole box is easy.
Water straight off the boil
The opposite of green tea. Roots and whole botanicals are dense and they need full heat to give anything up. Water that has gone off the boil makes a weak, flat cup.
Put something over the cup
The part almost everybody skips. The aromatics leave in the steam, so an uncovered cup loses most of the smell before you drink it. A saucer sends them back down.
Five to eight minutes
Longer than you think, and longer than most people give them. There is no penalty for forgetting it either: none of these three has the tannins that turn black tea bitter.
